Mechanical time clocks are the first generation of time and attendance recorders.  The clocks are typically built with moving parts and a typehead that advances time by moving a stamp whell.  These clocks are durable and suitable for dirty environments. 

Most mechanical clocks require a manual reset each month to move the typehead to the proper month and date setting.  The clocks will also need to be manually reset when daylight savings time changes occur.
